If your practice MCAT scores aren't where you need them, a data-driven approach to identifying and fixing your specific weaknesses will always outperform studying more of the same content.
Start With Your Score Report
Every AAMC practice exam provides a detailed score report by content category. Before doing anything else, download your reports from all full-lengths you've taken and create a simple spreadsheet: content category, questions attempted, percentage correct, and trend over time.
You are looking for: categories below 50% correct, categories with high question volume (meaning the exam tests them frequently), and categories where your score has not improved despite studying.
The Three Types of MCAT Score Problems
Type 1: Content gaps
You don't know the material. You read the explanation and it's genuinely new information. Fix: targeted content review in Khan Academy, Kaplan, or Princeton Review for that specific category. Then do 20–30 practice questions in that category only.
Type 2: Application errors
You know the content but don't apply it correctly to passage-based questions. The explanation confirms you knew the concept but you missed how the question was asking you to apply it. Fix: practice passage-based questions in that category. Practice reading each passage to identify what it's actually testing before looking at questions.
Type 3: Timing problems
You know the material and can answer correctly — but you run out of time and rush the last 15 questions. Fix: pacing drills. Set a 1-minute timer for science questions, 1.7-minute timer for CARS questions. Practice abandoning questions strategically rather than spending 4 minutes on a single question.
Section-Specific Improvement Strategies
Improving Chem/Phys
Most students struggle here with physics or general chemistry, not organic chemistry. Identify which subsection is pulling your score down. Physics struggles are usually conceptual — re-learn the 10 most tested physics relationships (fluids, circuits, optics, waves). General chemistry struggles are usually calculation-based — practice stoichiometry, equilibrium, and electrochemistry problems without shortcuts.
Improving Bio/Biochem
The broadest content section. If you're below 60%, your content gaps are likely in biochemistry (enzyme kinetics, metabolic pathways) or molecular biology (DNA replication, gene regulation). These are high-density high-yield topics. One week of focused biochemistry review can produce 2–3 point gains in this section.
Improving CARS
The hardest section to improve quickly. Two strategies that work: slow down and stop skimming (speed reading CARS passages backfires), and practice categorizing question types before attempting to answer. If you're below 124 in CARS with 6+ weeks remaining, dedicate 1.5–2 hours to CARS practice every single day.
Improving Psych/Soc
The most improvable section for most students. A comprehensive pass through the sociology vocabulary (social stratification, cultural capital, health disparities) and psychology theories (Piaget, Erikson, Bandura, Kohlberg) produces reliable score improvements. These are directly testable in a way that CARS is not.
When to Retake
If your practice scores are consistently 3+ points below your target with 4 weeks or less remaining, postponing is worth considering. Medical school admissions committees view multiple scores. A well-prepared single attempt scores better than two or three rushed attempts.
